Firefly is a design concept for a digital thermometer with the brand language of Le Crueset.

I was tasked to redesign this Alpha Grillers Digital Thermometer for Le Creuset, our speculative client.

Le Creuset uses flowing curves, playful forms, rich color gradients, embossed details, and durable materials to communicate elegance, simplicity, luxury and heritage.

Currently, Le Creuset offers no electronic products.

How might we update Le Creuset's brand language to convey thier values in a different product space?

Firefly’s flowing silhouette and and sweeping cut outs both communicate elegance and are easy to grip. Firefly’s form adapts Le Creuset’s 3 Line Motif into the material change of its parts.

Firefly uses a dead-front display to create a sense of luxury, simplicity, and delight while maintaining the utility of a digital thermometer.

Firefly uses a clock spring and latch mechanism to easily extend the probe at the press of a button, even while wearing an oven mitt.

Design for disassembly and repair ensures that Firefly can be used for years to come.

Silicone gaskets protect Firefly's internals and ensure it will withstand water and grease.

Firefly is comprised of an injection molded PMMA shell and a die cast stainless steel frame, combining cleanliness and durability with Le Creuset's Material Identity.
